Thursday's Eats ~ Sesame Chicken

I found this recipe for sesame chicken on Feathers in Our Nest a few months ago.  I love Chinese food, but I hate how unhealthy it can be - so I'm always looking for recipes that offer great flavor with healthy ingredients!

(I kinda forgot the sesame seeds, so yours will look a bit more like sesame chicken)

Chinese Sesame Chicken

1 lb. chicken, cut into 1-inch pieces
2 Tbsp. flour
2 Tbsp. cornstarch
1 Tbsp. sesame seeds
Oil
1 cup water
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
4 Tbsp. soy sauce
2 Tbsp. cornstarch
¼ - ½ tsp red pepper flakes (based on preference)

In a small bowl, combine flour and 2 Tbsp. cornstarch.  Coat the chicken pieces in the mixture. Fry on medium heat in a skillet in a small amount of oil for about 10 minutes, stirring once. Remove from heat.

In a bowl, combine water, sugar, vinegar, soy sauce, and cornstarch to form a sauce.  Add sauce to cooked chicken and return skillet to heat.  Add sesame seeds and cook until sauce is thickened.

Prepare brown or white rice as desired.  I also served steamed broccoli florets.

Serves 3-4

  1. This made me laugh. That's exactly how I cook - forget the sesame seeds for sesame chicken.
